With just six weeks left before Christmas Day, parents are beginning to think about what to get their little ones this yuletide.
As luck would have it, the much-anticipated DreamToys top toy list for Christmas 2024, as compiled by the Toy Retailers Association, has been published. The DreamToys list is seen as the definitive guide to the season's must-have toys and represents predictions of the year's most sought-after items in shops this Christmas.
A panel consisting of independent toy retailers and industry experts from diverse backgrounds, including big name chains and smaller shops, is responsible for selecting the list. At the helm of unveiling the list was none other than DreamToys ambassador and TV presenter Helen Skelton.
Sharing her her enthusiasm, Helen said: "Every year, parents and families want to get the best gifts they can for their children. With so much choice it can be a challenge to make sure you’re spending your hard earned money in the right place for the kids in our lives, which is why I’m thrilled to be helping launch this year’s DreamToys list. The list lets us all know what kids are hoping for this Christmas so we can get gifts they will play with time and time again."
Research from The Insights Family – a global market intelligence leader focusing on kids, young adults, and family dynamics – indicated that since 2021 there has been a consistent rise in the amount spent on children's presents, showing an increase of up to 35%.
And parents seem set to hit the high street once more for their festive shopping sprees, following last year's trend where visits to town and city centre stores saw a 9% and 10% spike in Q4 2023 compared with the rest of the year.
Chair of the DreamToys selection committee Paul Reader said: "More so than ever before, this year’s DreamToys list shows the incredible variety of experiences and play the UK’s vibrant toy industry has to offer consumers."
He added: "This research shows a healthy market and the importance of toys to both children and the parents gifting them each Christmas. It’s also heartening to see that trust in the high street, and seeing toys for yourself, is still of great importance to parents across the country."

DreamToys says the list showcases a range of exciting interactive toys, updated family favourites, and options for all ages, from pre-schoolers to adults, reflecting the diverse tastes and trends shaping the UK’s toy industry.
The panel picked the toys based on the value they offer - to the pockets of gift-givers and their users’ play time - as well as the patterns of play they inspire and the emerging trends they represent.
It's important to note that the list is presented alphabetically as a full top 20 and is not ranked, with prices ranging from £9.99 to £79.99. All prices are suggested retail prices - actual market price may vary.
