Emergency services descended on Bury town centre this afternoon amid fears of a gas leak.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a large number of firefighters and police outside an entrance to Mill Gate Shopping Centre shortly before 2pm today (Friday)

It came following reports of a suspected gas leak at a Santander bank branch in Union Street, the Manchester Evening News understands. The street was taped off between the shopping centre and The Rock while fire crews and gas engineers from Cadent assessed the scene.

A worker at a nearby shop said: "It was cordoned off from the entrance to the shopping centre up to Tim Hortons. They had a gas detector. I had to let a customer out of the back of the shop."

No gas leak was found and firefighters left the scene shortly after 3pm.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just before 2pm on Friday (November 8), two fire engines from Bury and Whitefield fire stations were called to a suspected gas leak at a commercial premises on Union Street, Bury.

“Firefighters alongside colleagues from Cadent Gas and Greater Manchester Police carried out checks with no gas leak detected. Crews were in attendance for around 50 minutes.”
