The Lake District has been named as the top trending destination for Brits planning a holiday closer to home, with three towns coming in the top five spots.

According to new research from TripAdvisor, 32 percent of Brits are looking to have a staycation this winter rather than jetting off for some sunshine further afield.

Borrowdale in the Lake District is the number one fastest growing destination for Brits, showing the region's popularity as the nearby towns of Bassenthwaite and Newby Bridge came in fourth and fifth place respectively.

It’s unsurprising the beautiful Borrowdale has ranked so highly. From cosy cafes to awe-inspiring walks, this gem of a town has everything you could ever want from a staycation.

Starting from the village of Grange, consider stopping in at the Grange Bridge Cottage Tea Shop for a cuppa and a slice of cake before heading into the countryside.

Borrowdale is one of the most popular places to rock climb in the Lake District because there are lots of low level fast drying crags which are easily accessible from the road. But if you’d rather fish, you can do that too at the hamlet of Watendlath.

The other village name dropped by TripAdvisor is Bassenthwaite, a beautiful village with a traditional green and a stream running through the centre of the town.

Bassenthwaite Lake surrounded by rolling hills and fields, and whitewashed houses,

There is an abundance of walking opportunities in the area including the mighty Skiddaw, Lord's Seat, Ullock Pike and Binsey Fell, described by Wainwright as 'a simple walk for a big view'.

Bassenthwaite is named after the lake it was built near, and this lake makes for plenty of boating, fishing and swimming opportunities (for the brave among us). Hundreds of birds including the osprey migrate to the lake and fish such as Atlantic salmon come to Bassenthwaite Lake to spawn.

Last but certainly not least is the village of Newby Bridge. This tiny little gem is small but mighty and takes its name from the gorgeous five arched stone bridge that was built over the river in 1651. It’s home to the aquarium of the lakes where you can discover the secret lives of all the wildlife and freshwater creatures that call the Lake District home.
